Hobbies and Interests

All work and no play makes life dull and boring. We only have one life to live on this planet, so we might as well enjoy it.

Hiking

My favorite hobby is hiking. It's great exercise, you meet a lot of interesting people, you can get some great photos, and all it really requires is some good shoes and a sense of adventure. And the best part is that it can cost little or nothing to enjoy. It's a great hobby for these recessionary times. Some of my favorite places to hike include:

If you're new to hiking, I'd encourage you to check out one of the many MeetUp groups to find a hike near you. There are many hikes available, from beginner to advanced. My favorite is The Los Angeles Hiking MeetUp Group. If you're a beginner, look for the easy hikes organized by Jose.

Camping

There's something special about cooking outdoors, roasting marsh mellows, spending the night in a tent, smelling the night air, listening to the sounds of the local nightlife and feeling closer to nature. The best place I have ever camped in the United States was the Grand Canyon. I've also enjoyed camping in Sturgis, SD, Zion National Park, Yosemite, and Big Bear.

Photography

I am very thankful for digital photography. I love that I can take an endless amount of photos for not much more than the cost of batteries. Some day, I hope to get a better quality camera, but my iPhone and my Panasonic Lumix (with 6 mega pixels) will just have to do for now.

As I walk, hike or generally get around town, I'm always looking for colorful things to photograph. Check out my "garden." When people ask me where these photos were taken, all I can say is, "everywhere."

Human Resources

I'm fascinated with the art and science that is involved with "the human side of business." I take advantage of every opportunity to learn more about the profession. I figure the more I learn, the more I can help others. The resources that have helped me the most include:

2011 was a great year. I earned my SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) certification, as well as the California certification from the HR Certification Institute.
